چکیده

Topologically ordered phases of matter, in particular so-called symmetry enriched topological (SET) phases, can exhibit quantum number fractionalization in the presence of global symmetry. In Z2 topologically ordered states in two dimensions, fundamental translations Tx and Ty acting on anyons can either commute or anticommute. This property, crystal momentum fractionalization, can be seen in a periodicity of the excited-state spectrum in the Brillouin zone. We present a numerical method to detect the presence of this form of symmetry enrichment given a projected entangled pair state (PEPS); we study the minima of spectrum of correlation lengths of the transfer matrix for a cylinder. As a benchmark, we demonstrate our method using a modified toric code model with perturbation. An enhanced periodicity in momentum clearly reveals the nontrivial anticommutation relation {Tx, Ty} = 0 for the corresponding quasiparticles in the system.

Bosonic topological crystalline insulators and anomalous symmetry fractionalization via the flux-fusion anomaly test

We introduce a method, dubbed the flux-fusion anomaly test, to detect certain anomalous symmetry fractionalization patterns in two-dimensional symmetry enriched topological (SET) phases. We focus on bosonic systems with Z2 topological order, and symmetry group of the form G = U(1)oG′, where G′ is an arbitrary group that may include spatial symmetries and/or time reversal. The anomalous fraction...

Translational Symmetry and Microscopic Constraints on Symmetry-Enriched Topological Phases: A View from the Surface

The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem and its higher-dimensional generalizations by Oshikawa and Hastings require that translationally invariant 2D spin systems with a half-integer spin per unit cell must either have a continuum of low energy excitations, spontaneously break some symmetries, or exhibit topological order with anyonic excitations. We establish a connection between these constraints and...

Symmetry Protected Topological Phases, Anomalies, and Cobordisms: Beyond Group Cohomology

We propose that Symmetry Protected Topological Phases with a finite symmetry group G are classified by cobordism groups of the classifying space of G. This provides an explanation for the recent discovery of bosonic SPT phases which do not fit into the group cohomology classification. We discuss the connection of the cobordism classification of SPT phases to gauge and gravitational anomalies in...

Model Realization and Numerical Studies of a Three-Dimensional Bosonic Topological Insulator and Symmetry-Enriched Topological Phases

We study a topological phase of interacting bosons in (3þ 1) dimensions that is protected by charge conservation and time-reversal symmetry. We present an explicit lattice model that realizes this phase and that can be studied in sign-free Monte Carlo simulations. The idea behind our model is to bind bosons to topological defects called hedgehogs. We determine the phase diagram of the model and...

Spectroscopic signatures of crystal momentum fractionalization

We consider gapped Z2 spin liquids, where spinon quasiparticles may carry fractional quantum numbers of space group symmetry. In particular, spinons can carry fractional crystal momentum. We show that such quantum number fractionalization has dramatic, spectroscopically accessible consequences, namely enhanced periodicity of the two-spinon density of states in the Brillouin zone, which can be d...
